As a tribute to President Abraham Lincoln's birth and 100-year anniversary of the first issuance of the Lincoln cent, the US mint issued four difference pennies, each with a reverse scene depicting a theme from distinct stages in Lincoln's Life. The obverse of the coins retained the traditional picture of Lincoln used first in 1909. As the picture above shows , one coin depicts a log cabin to represent Lincoln's birth and early life. A second coin, showing a young Lincoln sitting on a log reading a book represents his formative years in Indiana. In a third coin called "Presidential Life," Lincoln is seen standing before the state capitol in Illinois. The last coin pictures the partially complete US capitol which represents the unfinished business of the nation torn by slavery and a Civil War. These coins were issued quarterly in 2009, and today they are about thirteen years old. How many of you can honestly say you have seen them? Because the average person does not notice the coins he manages each day, few can truthfully say,” I have."
